Cerdanya is van oudsher een van de graafschappen van Catalonië. De regio wordt genoemd in het boek 'Kathedraal van de Zee' van Ildefonso Falcones. Deze regio werd regelmatig bezocht door de Inquisitie, omdat de Franse koning de Katharen, Waaldenzen, Begharen en Tempeliers over de Pyreneeën verdreef. De grensregio's waren de eersten die onder deze 'ketterse' invloeden kwamen te staan.
Het was ook hier dat Johanna, de broeder en vriend van Arnau, als onderdeel van de Inquisitie arriveerde.
