Belle-Île-en-Mer is met een oppervlakte van 83,76 km² het grootste Bretonse eiland in de Atlantische Oceaan. Het kanton Belle-Île ligt in het departement Morbihan van de provincie Bretagne. Het bevindt zich ten zuiden van het schiereiland van Quiberon, vlak bij de eilanden Houat en Hoëdic.
De Bretonse naam is Enez ar Gerveur . In de Romeinse tijd heette het Vindilis, vandaar in het oud-Bretons Gwezel, of Gwedel. Onder Napoleon werd het Île Joséphine genoemd.
