De religieuze stad Rocamadour was van de 12e tot de 14e eeuw een van de belangrijkste bedevaartsoorden in het christelijke westen
De beroemde Zwarte Madonna, vereerd voor haar wonderen in de miraculeuze Notre-Dame kapel, is sinds de 19e eeuw het voorwerp van hernieuwde devotie.
De heiligdommen van Rocamadour, toegankelijk via de Grand Escalier (de trappenstraat) die vanuit het centrum van de stad omhoog loopt naar het parvis, liggen tegen de rotsachtige helling van het kalksteenplateau.
De semi-trogloditische heiligdommen werden dus in de 12e eeuw gebouwd op de smalle en steile ruimte van een rotsterras.
