In zijn poging om het ding op te helderen, begint Francis Ponge met deze elementaire beschrijving: De tafel is (meestal) een houten dienblad dat stevig horizontaal op vier poten staat en waarop men kan zitten. Alain Domagala beschouwt deze benadering in eerste instantie met welwillendheid, maar des te beter om haar terug te dringen, tegen te spreken en de mogelijkheid van haar ommekeer op te roepen. Zijn houten tafel is te groot en ligt op zijn kant. Het is onmogelijk om erop te zitten. Het horizontale wordt verticaal. Als het zo staat, wordt het een wal. Het wordt eerst gezien als een architectonische constructie en verschilt van zijn oorspronkelijke functie. Deze immense, defensieve tafel kan niet worden teruggebracht tot een definitieve formule en stelt zich op vreemde wijze in dienst van iets anders dan zichzelf
