Newton Abbot is een civil parish in South West England, in district Teignbridge. De stad heeft een treinstation op een spoorwegknooppunt en heeft een lange geschiedenis als spoorwerkplaats.
De naam van de plaats komt van 'New Town of the Abbots', wat 'nieuwe abtsstad' betekent. De rivier de Lemon liep door de stad, die even buiten de plaats in de Teign mondt. In de late middeleeuwen werd het recht verkregen om een wekelijkse markt te houden. Vanaf de middeleeuwen nam in de plaatselijke economie de kledingindustrie en de kledinghandel een voorname plaats in. Verder waren de kabeljauwvisserij en de klei- en leerindustrie belangrijk. Er werd begin negentiende eeuw bovendien graniet vanuit Dartmoor richting zee doorgevoerd. Tegenwoordig is deze transportroute via het Templerpad te volgen.
