Hier in Miverton werd de grote wetenschapper Thomas Young geboren op 13 juni 1773 in een Quakersfamilie. Andrew Robinson schreef een biografie over deze wetenschapper met als titel: "The Last Man Who Knew Everything". Hij was bekend met vrijwel de hele toenmalige wetenschappelijke kennis van het begin van de 19de eeuw. Hij stond bekend als "het fenomeen Young". Hij verklaarde de optische verschijnselen van de diffractie en interferentie van licht. Als egyptoloog kwam hij met de eerste wetenschappelijke ontcijfering van de hiërogliefen.
