Het was in 1618 dat het hoofd van de ontdekkingsreiziger en cartograaf sir Walter Raleigh werd afgehakt, na een tweede en mislukte poging om El Dorado te bereiken. Dit gebeurde in het Paleis van Whitehall, dat op dat moment de hoofdresidentie van de Engelse monarchen in Londen was.
De belangrijkste reden was dat Raleigh gebieden aanviel die door de Spanjaarden werden geclaimd. De Spaanse ambassadeur lobbyde voor de uitvoering van Raleigh.
Zijn lichaam zou worden begraven in de lokale kerk in Beddington, Surrey, de woning van Lady Raleigh, maar werd uiteindelijk ter ruste gelegd in St. Margaret's, Westminster, waar zijn graf vandaag de dag nog steeds bezocht kan worden.
