Toen Peter Gabriel in 1975 zonder noemenswaardige meningsverschillen de succesvolle band Genesis verliet, waren de verwachtingen hooggespannen naar wat de excentrieke zanger solo zou uitbrengen. Het was twee jaar wachten op het eerste album, dat in Toronto werd opgenomen. De gemakkelijk in het oor liggende single ‘Solsbury Hill’ klonk meteen heel anders dan Genesis. Het is een autobiografisch nummer over een spirituele ervaring op de top van Solsbury Hill. “Het nummer gaat over loslaten, over de bereidheid om te verliezen wat je hebt, over het verlangen naar wat je daarvoor in de plaats krijgt”, zei Gabriel.
