Met 98.156 inwoners is Udine na Triëst de op één na grootste stad van de regio en wordt beschouwd als de belangrijkste stad van het historische landschap Friuli. Een inwoneraantal van meer dan 100.000 bevestigde het registerkantoor begin 2013 voor het eerst in 25 jaar.
De stad ligt op 46,07° n.B. en 13,24° o.L. tussen de Zuidalpen en de Adriatische Zee, slechts 20 km van de Sloveense grens en ongeveer 54 km van Oostenrijk verwijderd.
