Castel del Monte, oftewel het Kasteel van de Berg, werd in de jaren 1240 gebouwd door keizer Frederik II. De plek staat op de Werelderfgoedlijst. Volgens één theorie is de achthoek een symbool tussen een vierkant (dat de aarde voorstelt) en een cirkel (die de hemel voorstelt). Frederik II liet zich mogelijk inspireren door de Rotskoepel in Jeruzalem, die hij tijdens de Zesde Kruistocht had gezien, of door de slotkapel van de Dom van Aken.
