De Boog van Janus is gebouwd rond 356 n.Chr. in opdracht van keizer Constantius II ter ere van zijn vader Constantijn de Grote. De oorspronkelijke naam was dan ook Arcus divi Constantini, de boog van de vergoddelijkte Constantijn. Janus was de Romeinse god van de poorten en bruggen, maar deze naam voor de boog is pas na de Romeinse tijd bedacht.
De boog is gebouwd in het Velabrum, de vallei tussen de belangrijkste heuvels van Rome, de Capitolijn en de Palatijn. Het Velabrum vormde de belangrijke verbinding tussen het Forum Romanum en het Forum Boarium. De Boog van Janus stond waarschijnlijk op een kruising van vier wegen en kon zo als overdekte handelsplaats gebruikt worden. Direct onder de boog stroomt de Cloaca Maxima, het antieke riool van Rome.
