Eric Weiner beschrijft heel goed de sfeer hier aan de oude Mercato Vecchio in zijn boek "Geography of Genius": "Florence was een stad van kooplieden en bankiers. Loop door de geplaveide straten van de stad naar de Mercato Vecchio, de oude markt, en je vindt ijverige mannen die aan lange houten tafels zitten, geld wisselen, leningen regelen, deals sluiten. Toen een bank failliet ging, werd de tafel stuk gemaakt; dus het woord bankrupt betekent 'gebroken tafel'. Aan het begin van de Renaissance had Florence bijna tachtig banken."
