Na het schandaal rond de executie van Monaldeschi in Château Fontainebleau (Frankrijk) op bevel van koningin Christina keerde ze terug naar Rome en werd door kardinaal Mazarin ondergebracht in zijn palazzo tegenover de residentie van de paus op het Quirinaal. Paus Alexander VII wilde haar niet meer zien en eiste haar vertrek daar. Na bemiddeling door kardinaal Azzolino en de Venetiaanse ambassadeur Correr verhuisde ze naar Palazzo Riario nabij Trastevere.
