De brug verbindt de kades van de Amstel ter hoogte van de Kerkstraat/Nieuwe Kerkstraat, tussen de Keizersgracht/ Nieuwe Keizersgracht en de Prinsengracht/ Nieuwe Prinsengracht. De brug is sinds 2002 een rijksmonument. Op 14 juni 2015 kreeg ze een ICOMOS Water en erfgoed schildje . Jaarlijks vindt op Bevrijdingsdag bij de brug een concert plaats, meestal in aanwezigheid van prinses Beatrix en koning Willem-Alexander. De brug is het decor van menig film; de bekendste is ongetwijfeld de James Bondfilm Diamonds are forever.
