Giethoorn is een waterstreekdorp in de kop van Overijssel, in de gemeente Steenwijkerland in de Nederlandse provincie Overijssel en ligt tussen Steenwijk en Meppel.
Giethoorn was tot 1973 een zelfstandige gemeente. Het ging toen samen met Wanneperveen, Blokzijl en Vollenhove deel uitmaken van de gemeente Brederwiede. Op 1 januari 2001 fuseerden de gemeenten Brederwiede, Steenwijk en IJsselham tot de gemeente Steenwijkerland.
