Het ligt ten zuiden van Joure, niet ver van het Tjeukemeer. Aan de westelijke kant loopt de Scharsterrijn, de noordwestelijke kant de A6 en in het zuidoosten loopt de Molensloot. Het dorp vormt samen met Oldeouwer en Ouwsterhaule een drielingdorp, dat ook wel Ouwster Trijega wordt genoemd.In 2021 telde het dorp 85 inwoners. Soms spelt men de plaatsnaam ook als Ouwster Nijega en Ousternijega. Het dorp kent een dorpskern van los gelegen huizen aan de Jetze Veldstraweg. Ook aan de Meerweg staan een aantal huizen die onder het dorpsgebied van Ouwster-Nijega vallen.
