Het ligt ten noordwesten van Nijland en ten oosten van Bolsward. Door het dorp stroomt de Hartwerdervaart en door het dorpsgebied stroomt ook de Oude Kloostervaart. In 2021 telde het dorp 110 inwoners. Onder het dorp valt ook de buurtschap Bloemkamp.Het dorp is ontstaan op een terp. De plaats werd al vrij vroeg bewoond maar erg groot werd het niet. Toch had het aanzien gezien in 1322 de landdagen van Westergo gehouden. Het werd toen Hartwert genoemd.
