Het ligt direct ten noordoosten van de stad Franeker, tussen het Oudemeer en de Rijksstraatweg. Door het dorpsgebied stroomt de Schalsumervaart en loopt de A31. In 2021 telde het dorp 150 inwoners.Het dorp is op een terp ontstaan met daarop een kerk uit het einde van de 12e of begin 13e eeuw. Het betreft de Nicolaaskerk. Het dorp vormt samen met Boer, Peins, Ried en Zweins de Franeker Vijfga.
