Nadat België zich in 1830 onafhankelijk had verklaard, heeft het een lange tijd geduurd voordat de scheiding officieel is vastgelegd.
Op 8 augustus 1843 werd dit gevolgd door een verdrag, gesloten in Maastricht, over de markering van de grens.
In datzelfde jaar werd begonnen met het plaatsen van gietijzeren grenspalen, beginnend met grenspaal nummer 1 op het Drielandenpunt in Vaals en eindigend met grenspaal nummer 365 nabij Retranchement in Zeeuws-Vlaanderen, allemaal met jaartal 1843
