De boterweg loopt ten noorden van Stokkum richting Duitse grens. Hoewel de naam ‘Boterweg’ ook voorkomt in plaatsen die ver van een landsgrens liggen, gaat het verhaal dat het hier een smokkelroute voor boter betreft. Lange tijd was boter in Duitsland zwaarder belast dan in Nederland zodat smokkelen loonde. Bekijk eens de documentaire over botersmokkel.
