Härnösand is de hoofdstad van de gemeente Härnösand in het landschap Ångermanland en de provincie Västernorrlands län in Zweden. De stad is sinds 1778 de hoofdstad van de provincie Västernorrlands län. De stad heeft 18003 inwoners en een oppervlakte van 1090 hectare.
De stad ligt aan de Botnische Golf en heeft een natuurlijke haven. Een gedeelte van de stad ligt op het eiland Härnön. Ten noorden van de stad begint het gebied met de naam Hoge kust, dit gebied staat op de werelderfgoedlijst van UNESCO.
