Bratislava is de hoofdstad van Slowakije. De stad ligt in het uiterste zuidwesten van het land, aan weerszijden van de Donau en aan de voet van de Kleine Karpaten. Ze telt circa 430.000 inwoners.
De stad ligt op korte afstand van zowel Oostenrijk als Hongarije en zowel Duitsers/Oostenrijkers als Hongaren hebben in de geschiedenis van de stad een grote rol gespeeld. In de voornaamste stad van Slowakije woont nog steeds een etnisch Hongaarse minderheid van ongeveer 15.000 personen.
