Het Metropolitan Museum of Art ontving in 1889 een schenking van de bankier Henry Marquand: het schilderij 'Vrouw met een waterkruik' van Vermeer. Het werd aangeschaft voor slechts 800 dollar, wat vandaag de dag ongeveer 16.000 dollar zou zijn.
Destijds dachten ze dat het schilderij van De Hooch was, en niet van Vermeer.
Het bevat ook andere schilderijen van Vermeer: 'Een slapend meisje', 'Portret van een jonge vrouw', 'Een jonge vrouw zittend aan het virginaal', 'De allegorie van het geloof' en 'Vrouw met een luit'.
