Dupont Circle is het punt linksboven in het stratenplan van Washington en stelt een pentagram voor. Sommigen zien in dit symbool het werk en de hand van de vrijmetselaars in Washington.
De architect Pierre Charles L'Enfante, die vrijmetselaar was, ontwierp in 1791 het Governmental Center van Washington, D.C. Het stratenplan dat hij in het Governmental Center ontwierp, vertoont bepaalde occulte vrijmetselaarssymbolen.
In 1882 hernoemde het Congres het plein tot "Dupont Circle" en gaf toestemming voor een gedenkbeeld van Samuel Francis Du Pont, als erkenning voor zijn dienst als schout-bij-nacht tijdens de Burgeroorlog.
