Het World Trade Center of WTC was een complex van zeven gebouwen met een totaal vloeroppervlak van 1,24 miljoen m² gelegen in het financiële hart van New York.
Het WTC was ontworpen door Minoru Yamasaki en Julian Roth van Emery Roth & Sons, ingenieur Leslie Earl Robertson en ontwikkeld door de Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. In 1960 kwam de Downtown-Lower Manhattan Development Association , opgericht en bestuurd door David Rockefeller, met het idee om een World Trade Center om Lower Manhattan te revitaliseren. Rockefeller kreeg steun van zijn broer Nelson, toenmalig gouverneur van de staat New York. Het WTC was, net als vrijwel alle World Trade Centers op de wereld, lid van de World Trade Centers Association. Op 24 juli 2001 werd het complex geleased aan Larry A. Silverstein.
