In 1856, Baron Charles van Caloen and his wife Countess Savina de Gourcy Serainchamps had the romantic Castle of Loppem built.
The architecture and interiors have been preserved in their original state . In addition, the castle houses a rich art collection.
In the past, artists and kings came here to visit. King Albert I and Queen Elisabeth stayed there in 1918 during the First World War. The then formed "government of Loppem" promulgated three revolutionary edicts: the introduction of the single right to vote for men, the Dutchification of Ghent University and the recognition of trade union freedom.
The impressive castle is located in a romantic park with ponds and a maze: an ideal trip for young and old! Individual visitors can visit the castle from the Easter holidays until the end of the autumn holidays. Groups can come here every day of the year, by reservation.
