Description by the author

From Drachenfels in the Siebengebirge to Emmerich on the Rhine, you can experience historic town centres, the metropolitan ambience of cities like Cologne and Düsseldorf and marvel at the breathtaking splendour of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites, the castles of Augustusburg and Falkenlust.

The section of the Rhine Cycle Route in NRW starts in the Siebengebirge, which impresses with its gorge-like valleys and densely wooded areas, and takes you along the Drachenfels and the old federal capital Bonn to the lively metropolis of Cologne. In Brühl near Cologne, you can take a breather and marvel at the UNESCO World Heritage Sites Augustusburg Castle and Falkenlust Castle. The spires of Cologne Cathedral will show you the way to the cathedral city. Via the medieval town of Zons, you will reach the cultural metropolis of Düsseldorf, where you can experience concentrated art and architecture during a break. Krefeld on the left bank of the Rhine boasts Bauhaus architecture by Mies van der Rohe from the 1920s. The bustling inland port city of Duisburg with its industrial culture is just as much a setting as the rural idyll of the Lower Rhine or fascinating architectural monuments all along the route. Shortly before the Dutch border, Emmerich offers a beautiful view of the Rhine, which is particularly wide here, and an impressive structure: at 803 metres, the Emmerich Rhine Bridge is the longest suspension bridge in Germany. Lively and full of contrasts, this is how the popular cycle route in the most populous federal state presents itself.

The route can be travelled on both sides of the Rhine and is signposted.
