This 19 km bike tour takes you from Simpelveld to the German border. From there you cycle from the Aachen countryside through the hamlet of Vetschau. This typical ribbon village originated along the medieval connecting road between Heerlen and Aachen. Along the way, you'll see traces of history such as the remains of the Western Wall, pyramid-shaped concrete blocks to stop tanks during World War II .
Via the more urban Laurensberg, a suburb of Aachen, you cycle to the imperial city to the beginning of the Vennbahn at the fish market. Nearby is the imposing Aachen Cathedral, where Charlemagne is buried, a UNESCO World Heritage Site for a reason, and well worth a visit before getting back on your bike.
This route is signposted with the special lime signposts. In Germany, these are smaller and partly interspersed with general bicycle signs. From the centre of Aachen, follow the route via the signs to Vennbahn.
The starting point of the route is Miljoenenlijn station in Simpelveld.
