HO1 - Amelungsberg Route

A sign at the Schneegrund hiking car park points to a stone cist grave, presumably 45 m long and 2 m wide, which may be one of the most significant megalithic tombs in Western Europe. The cultural journey continues with a reference to the western border of the ancient Germanic Thilitigau at Amelungsberg, and extends to refuge castles from around the time of Christ's birth, leading to the ancestral castle of the Counts of Roden, one of the numerous dynasties in this region, which was built in the first half of the 12th century. The Amelungsburg is a 300 x 900 m large refuge castle on the 312 m high plateau of the mountain, part of a chain of similar structures in the Weser region at strategically advantageous points, dating back to around the time of Christ's birth. It likely played a role during the Romans' campaigns against the Germanic tribes. The famous Battle of Süntel from 782 may have also taken place here. The tour also passes through the Schneegrund valley with the Schneegrund Nature Friends House and along the Höllenbach stream. This circular route is not only culturally significant but also very scenic. The path mostly goes through a nature reserve, so please stay on the trails!
