Wat Phra That

Beschrijving

Situated to the east of Wat Phra Kaeo, this temple of considerable size was laid out in a rectangular shape. A temple wall made of laterite and brick has the only gate on the eastern side of the wall.
Buildings in the temple are aligned on an east-west axis.

At the front of the temple, there is a vihara base made of laterite. Behind the vihara base is the principal circular of bell-shaped chedi made of brick in Sukhothai style located. This chedi, enclosed with an L-shaped gallery, is in relatively good condition. The L-shaped gallery was joined to the back part of the vihara. There are two subordinate chedis made of brick in bell shape in front of the vihara base. The layout of buildings in Wat Phra That is a combination of the Sukhothai and Ayutthaya styles. The construction of a vihara in front of the principal chedi in a circular or bell shape belongs to the Sukhothai style. In contrast, the main chedi enclosed with an L-shaped gallery joined to the back part of a vihara was arranged following a layout of a temple in the Ayutthaya period, e.g. Wat Phutthaisawan, Wat Maha That, Wat Racha Burana, etc.

However, a Khmer style stupa known as a Prang was built as the principal building of the temple, whereas Wat Phra That of Kamphaeng Phet had its main building constructed in a bell shape. The principal circular or bell-shaped chedi of Wat Phra That was made of brick except for its lowermost unadorned base which was built from laterite. The chedi body rests on a structure consisting of an octagonal base of receding tiers and three receding tiers in the form of an overturned lotus. There are some traces of plaster decoration in the form of lotus petals around the lowermost part of the relatively small bell-shaped body of the chedi. Above the stupa body is a base of receding tiers with 12 indented corners. The uppermost part of the chedi comprises layers of receding circular mouldings and a tapering finial. The octagonal base of several receding tiers makes this bell-shaped chedi very tall.
The form of the principal chedi of Wat Phra That is regarded as a characteristic of the architectural style of Kamphaeng Phet.
