Van de middeleeuwse stadsmuren en -poorten is een groot gedeelte bewaard gebleven. Van de ooit 4 aanwezige stadspoorten zijn er 3 overgebleven namelijk Porta al Sole, Porta Alberti en Porta del Rivellino. Porta al Sole is de hoofdpoort en geeft uit op het Zuiden vandaar de verwijzing al Sole. Bovenaan is een wapenschild van de familie de Medici waar te nemen.
