The enormous triumphal arch announces your arrival at the Jubelpark from way off. The park was created in 1880, in celebration of Belgium’s fiftieth anniversary. At that time there was only a modest arch. The current construction was only finished in 1905 due to a lack of money. King Leopold II funded it with profits from his private colony, the Congo Free State.
The park was the scene of the world expo in both 1888 and 1897. The building complex now accommodates a whole range of museums and cultural institutions. Including the Military Museum, featuring Leopold II’s bike among its highlights. However, the car remains king in this green, cycle-friendly zone, with Autoworld, a museum dedicated to cars, a large open-air car park and the rumble of the motorway beneath the park.
