The German-Belgian nature reserve of High Venn-Eifel, whose German segment is also known as North Eifel nature reserve, is a cross-border sanctuary, with portions in the Federal German states of North-Rhine Westphalia and Rhineland-Pfalz as well as the Belgian province of Liège. Its total area is 2442 km², and its emblem is the black grouse (Lyrurus tetrix).
On the Belgian side it is the High Venn that impresses most of all; an area of high moor- and heathland, which originated at the end of the most recent ice age 7500 years ago, and is home to rare animal and plant species.
But the many villages nestling among the picturesque hilly landscape, with their typical quarry stone houses and high hedgerows, offer a charm all their own at any time of year.
