The St. John the Baptist Church is the parish church of Grammene, located on Koffiebeekstraat and Sint-Janstraat.
The church was first mentioned in 1121 when the patronage was granted to the St. Bavo Abbey in Ghent. The church was situated on a sand ridge near the Leie River and presumably initially belonged to the seat of the lordship. It was a single-naved cruciform church, which was modified in the 16th and 18th centuries. The church had an octagonal west tower that was probably originally a crossing tower and dated back to the 13th century. The church was set on fire by iconoclasts in 1592, and during the restoration around 1609, the tower was raised.
