The Keyenbempt in Uccle is a remnant of the marshy areas that used to lie along the Geleytsbeek in the Senne valley. In 2006, Bruxelles Environnement was responsible for the remediation and redevelopment of the zone with two types of landscape: a rural area with marshes and vegetable gardens and a wooded background.
This area has a long history. Archaeological finds provided evidence of a human presence as early as 6000 BC and the Nekkersgat mill that you pass was already mentioned in a written text from 1299. Yet one of the most remarkable passages is the fact that the Belgian state once expropriated here as part of the construction of the Brussels Ring Road. This was not done, partly due to neighbourly protests, with the result that this piece of green has been preserved.
Until the 1960s, the confluence of the Linkebeek with the Geleytsbeek was also located here. However, a large part of the Linkebeek was then completely filled in and the water has since been led underground via Drogenbos to the Senne
