The Neo-Gothic Church of Our Lady in Leffinge was built from 1877 to 1879. It replaced a dilapidated Romanesque-Gothic predecessor. The initiator was the Bruges bishop Faict, who originated from Leffinge.
The 13 towers of the building refer to his birth year (1813). We also encounter the Templars in the church of Leffinge...
It is the case that the family de Fauquemberghes, then powerful nobility, held the altar and tithes of the parish of Leffinge as a fief from the count of Flanders. This family had close ties with the Knights Templar.
Moreover, one of their ancestors was even a co-founder of the order of the temple. In the Middle Ages, the church tower was used to store the charters of the Chamberlings' Guild and the watering.
