Chimay city walk to all sights

This is a city guide for the city of Chimay with a description of all the sights.

Start at the Place Léopold car park.

We walk to the Place des Ormaux , which is dominated by the former casino , which now houses a cozy brasserie with a very special design ( a old photo collection). Already? Or when we return?

We walk around the square, past a war memorial and arrive at the Place du Chapitre with its Chapelle Notre-Dame de la Salette.

We descend to the lower town along one of the grand escaliers to the old washing place and the Fontaine Sainte-Prisce where the legend ' La légende des sept sauts' took place.

We stay in the lower town and walk to the recently opened (2016) Abbaye Notre-Dame de la Paix. We get a view of the Chapelle Notre-Dame de Zychem of the former Dominican monastery.

We return and go along the Rue Saint-Nicolas along the walls of the castle, the entrance of which we reach a little later. A visit is definitely worth it! The dining room, the main hall and certainly the oval theater in Italian style are worth a visit.

On the way to the main market we pass through the neo-Gothic gate. Here the Fontaine des Princes, with on each side of the monument a statue of a member of the princely family, and the Collégiale Saints-Pierre-et-Paul, draw attention. The latter is one of the most beautiful religious buildings in the province of Hainaut, given its spherical bell tower.

The Grand Café is the ideal place to taste local products ( Chimay cheeses and Trappist beers )!

On our return we take a detour past the statue of Jehan Froissart, who is considered one of the most important historical figures of the young Belgian state.

Along the Ravel we reach the 16th century Chapelle Notre-Dame de Miséricorde. We return past the Saint-Ghislain chapel and pass another small Monument for the political and prisoners of war.
