Valais Cycling Tour: Le Bouveret - Sion (stage 10) Velo in Le Bouveret

The Valais is more than just a mountainous region as the canton extends all the way to Lake Geneva, one of the largest lakes in Europe. The start of the route takes you along the Rhone River, the iconic river of the Valais. This stage allows you to discover the beautiful vineyards of Valais, the largest area of vineyards in Switzerland. The ascent to Ovronnaz is the highlight of the stage. Finally you descend into the city of Sion, nestled in the heart of central Valais.
The beginning of the stage is flat and slowly rises along the shady banks of the Rhone River. After passing St-Maurice and its ancient abbey, the route shifts directions at Martigny in an area known as the Rhone elbow. You then enter into the heart of the Valais as you ride through orchards into Fully. The stage continues into the vineyards as you start climbing towards Ovronnaz. A magnificent panoramic view awaits you before your descent into the wine making village of Chamoson. The itinerary continues in the direction of Ardon, then Conthey before your arrival into the city of Sion. Your tour is complete! Now is the time to relax and enjoy the charming café terraces in the city centre.
When you arrive in Aigle (Illarsaz), cross the Rhone bridge to check out the velodrome at the World Cycling Centre, headquarters of the international governing body for cycling, the UCI. Take a refreshing break in the café!

From autoroute A9, take the Villeneuve exit and follow signs towards France (route H144). After crossing the Rhone take a right on Route 21 towards France until Le Bouveret.
This tour is one stage of the Valais Cycling tour where the finish is not at the same place as the starting point. Therefore, we recommend arriving by public transport. Otherwise there are parkings at Aquaparc or Swiss Vapeur Parc, follow the local park routeing to access them. 
We recommend: bike in excellent working order, helmet, gloves and bell, clothing suitable for the weather (always carry a waterproof), food and drink.
