It was created in 1861 on behalf of the developer Adolph Sierich, parallel to the Alster, so that the wet meadows on the left bank of the Alster could be drained and built upon. It starts below the Winterhude ferry house and runs parallel to the Alster river, which was canalized in the early 20th century. It branches off from the Alster creek at the boarding place of the Alster shipping company "Winterhuder Fährhaus" and runs along its left side behind the houses and properties of Leinpfad street up to the Rondeelteich.
The street Leinpfad was named after the linen or towing path that ran along the Alster, where boats were towed upstream by ropes. The villa plots are located on the former wet meadows, while the Leinpfad runs along the Alster creek; therefore, it is often mistakenly considered to be the Leinpfad canal.
