Veitshöchheim Castle

The Veitshöchheim Castle is a former summer residence of the prince-bishops of Würzburg, later of the kings of Bavaria, in Veitshöchheim near Würzburg. The castle complex is known for its surrounding rococo garden.
The origins of the castle are documented on the ground floor, where a hall with five arcade arches of the prince-bishops of Würzburg is preserved from 1680–82. It served as a shelter after hunting. The building, which is now two stories high, still features the four bay window projections of the older structure. The architect Antonio Petrini was likely involved in the construction, as well as the master builder Heinrich Zimmer. Later, an expansion was made by adding two window axes and a representative upper floor, which was flanked by four corner towers. In 1753, Balthasar Neumann gave the building its current appearance: he added side pavilions, crowned the whole with a distinctive sweeping roof, and included a representative staircase inside.
