It is the oldest park in Spandau and was created in 1913/14 under the name "Wröhmännerplatz" in the course of the social reforms as a local recreation area for Spandau's Neustadt, which was poor in green spaces and was mainly home to working-class families with many children. Previously, the city harbour and a storage area, which were built in the middle of the 19th century, were located on this site. This was filled in 1875 with sand from the removed school mountains on the former meadow of the Wröhmanns. Located directly on the Oberhavel, it also forms the eastern boundary of the park. As early as 1894, the Beautification Association had a green strip laid out to the west of Neuendorfer Straße.
The park bears its name after the medieval Wröhmänner. These were peasants who had joined together to form a Wröhe. A Wröhe was a voluntary jurisdiction in which those in its association settled their field cultivation and field disputes independently. The area was considered their former meeting place.
