Cherry hiking trail 3 - to beautiful views with Hagen cherry varieties

This hike takes you to one of the most beautiful districts of Hagen, to Mentrup. From the route at Heidhorn, you have a view far into the Tecklenburger Land on clear days.

Lost treasures - rediscovered in Hagen a.T.W.:
Lucien Cherry: This variety was discovered around 1800 by the steward Uellner at the estate of Alt-Luneberg near Bremerhaven and spread to many other regions from there. In the second half of the 20th century, the Lucien Cherry was officially considered lost until it was rediscovered in Hagen a.T.W. in 2004. The yellow-red fruits ripen moderately early, are very tasty, and are good for preserving.

Flamentiner: The variety probably originated in the second half of the 17th century near Angers in northern France. In 1804, it was listed in the catalog of the Paris National Nursery under the name "Le Flammentin". Due to a mix-up of names, the variety was spread in Thuringia as "Türkine". In Hagen a.T.W., the yellow-red variety is known by the local name "Leggeske". Recently, it was considered lost but was rediscovered in Hagen a.T.W.

Dönissen's Yellow Knorpel Cherry: The variety probably originated in Guben/Neiße (Brandenburg) as a seedling and was named after its breeder. It was first mentioned in literature in 1825 and is one of the few fully yellow cherry varieties, which is why it is also called "Amber Cherry". It ripens moderately late and is hardly eaten by birds because of its color. The sunny yellow fruit spread from Dönissen tastes heavenly!
