Rome is the capital and most populous city of Italy, of the Lazio region and the homonymous metropolitan city. In 2020, it had 2,790,712 inhabitants.
It is on the banks of the Tiber, 22 km from the Mediterranean Sea. It is sometimes referred to as the "Eternal City" or "City of Seven Hills." It is the third most populous city in the European Union. It covers an area of 1,287.36 km², the largest in the country, and ranks among the cities with the most extensive territory. The current mayor since January 2016 is Virginia Raggi, from the Five Star Movement. As the capital of Christianity, Rome contains within its boundaries the Vatican City, an extraterritorial enclave that includes St. Peter's Basilica, as well as other Roman buildings. The Italian capital is therefore the only city in the world that hosts another state. Furthermore, it is the headquarters of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations.
