The Waag originated in 1488 when part of it was built as the "Saint Anthony's Gate" as a city gate. By the 17th century, the city was bursting at the seams and this city gate lost its actual function since a large part of the city was already outside this gate. This was not only the case for the Waag but also for the entire city wall built in the 15th-16th centuries. Now only the "Schreierstoren," the "Waag," the "Montelbaanstoren," and the "Regulierstoren" (the lower part of the Munttoren) testify to that city wall. Since the city gates lost their function as gates, the Saint Anthony's Gate was converted in 1618 into a weighing house: hence the name 'The Waag'.
