To the right of the two benches in front of the knight's court Gunterstein stands a hoofslag pole. In the 18th and 19th centuries, dozens of these hard stone poles lined the Vecht. They were a kind of border marker indicating who was responsible for the maintenance of a part of the dike. The now-placed pole bears the inscription: 'Breukelen cum suis' and thus marked the part that Breukelen and its surroundings had to maintain. All villages along the Vecht and in the hinterland contributed to the maintenance of the Vechtdijk, as everyone depended on a strong dike to keep the water at bay. Most hoofslag poles have disappeared over time. This pole was rescued from the municipal dump, restored, and placed here 10 years later, at the end of 2016.
