You are now looking at the choir of the reformed church, according to experts one of the most beautiful village churches in the province of Utrecht. Around 1350 the construction of this church began, which was changed and enlarged in the 15th and 16th centuries. The tower portal is the oldest part, in Romanesque style. The rest of the church was built in the airier late Gothic style. The church was dedicated to the Assumption of Mary, which was celebrated for centuries with an annual procession. Kockengen even became a place of pilgrimage!

After the Reformation, at the end of the 16th century, the church was taken over by the Protestants. The Catholics worshipped in hidden churches until 1852, when a new Catholic church was inaugurated on the Voorstraat.

The historical photo on the sign shows that the church square was also used as a cattle market. To the right of the church was a cigar factory in the 19th century, which provided good employment in the village.

To the left of the church is the former town hall. The municipal coat of arms still hangs above the front door. Before the town hall moved in in 1938, the public primary school was located in the building.
