Drontermeerroute

This route is an interesting tour through an old cultural landscape and through new country. Between the old land (polder Oosterwolde) and the new land (after reclamation of Flevoland), there are randmeren. These edge lakes serve to prevent the drying out of the old land. At the same time, the randmeren offer many opportunities for water sports and other forms of recreation. The edge lakes and the reed beds on the river are of international importance for marsh and water birds. In winter, huge concentrations of water birds can often be observed from the dikes on the water. The Oosterwolde polder is known as a stopping place for wild geese.

The Drontermeer is a small and shallow edge lake between East Flevoland and Gelderland / Overijssel, from Kampen to Elburg. The randmeren were created in 1957 during the reclamation of Flevoland. The Drontermeer is especially important for the small swan that forages on aquatic plants that occur in the area. In addition to waterfowl such as cormorant, elm and ducks, this edge lake is also important for the large karekite and bittern, which breed in the reed beds along the shores of the old land.

A green edge of forests has been laid out along the edge lakes. The cycle route runs through the Abbert and Revebos, very varied and bird-rich forest areas. Between the hardwood and the wood, orchids and mushrooms enrich the soil.
