Notes on the history of Guimarães refer to the existence of an ancient temple built to invoke the martyr Saint Sebastian , which would have existed until 1570 in Campo de S. Francisco, on the site where the church was then built.
With the disappearance of the religious orders and the demolition of the parish church in 1892 , the Church of Saint Sebastian came into being in the former convent of Santa Rosa de Lima, built between 1727 and 1737. Highlights of the church's heritage include the main altar in gilded wood carvings at the top of the church - built in 1741-42 - two side altars in gilded and polychrome wood carvings from 1745, the 20th century altar containing the image of Saint Sebastian in neoclassical style, the Joanine organ , built in 1776 in gilded and polychrome wood carvings, and a series of gilded wooden pelmats from the Joanine period.
