Le long de Côte d'Opale, on peut voir de nombreuses falaises impressionnantes qui s'effritent rapidement en raison de la montée du niveau de la mer et des changements climatiques qui frappent les falaises avec violence. L'État français a anticipé ce problème. En 2012, il a transféré la gestion du risque d'érosion aux maires. Pour certaines communes, cela représente un grand défi technique et financier. On appelle cela passer la patate chaude.
