Carmes Promenade

The walk begins at the kiosk and leads you to a narrow path that enters the former "Carrières des Carmes," now used as "The Quarries of Imagination." Once there was a feudal castle here. Nature has reclaimed the area, and nothing of this rich past is now visible. Once you reach the top, you can enjoy a wide view of the landscapes of the Samber and the Geopark; below you see a viewpoint at the old extraction site. The marble sawmill of Sainte-Anne, now S.A. Merbes-Sprimont, was established in 1868. This company experienced extraordinary growth in the early 20th century with more than 600 employees and supplied to the Antwerp Zoo, the Palace of Justice, the National Bank of Brussels, the Royal Palace of Laeken, and exported worldwide, such as to the Crown Prince's Palace in Tokyo and the National School of Fine Arts in Rio de Janeiro.
